As the infernal Covid-19 and corona virus runs rampant, our way of life will forever change. No longer will we be able go out in public with complete confidence. We will all be afraid of getting sick.
Now we have to wear face coverings and wash our hands frequently. Stand 6 feet apart we are warned, don’t gather with a lot of people. Bars, gyms, movie theaters and “non-essential” places forced closed. We can’t fly to destinations without fear. We are reluctant to gather with friends and family. Outdoor excursions are curtailed. This is what Covid-19 has done.
This is causing a mass force in job reductions and killing our once thriving economy. Unemployment is higher than I’ve ever seen it and that includes in the recession torn 70’s. Benefits are slow coming and some not at all. The government gave us $1200.00 to stay home in hopes it would help.
States re-opened are now closing because the Covid-19 virus is spreading again. So we are told to stay home, definitely if we are sick. Self isolating is now the norm. We are being separated from our loved ones now more than ever.
This will of course change retailing as we once knew it. With our stay at home order we are no longer frequenting malls, grocery stores, and shops.
Now with mobile devices being the most popular way to shop eCommerce sites are exerting more energy and intensity to improving customer’s online experience. Millions of consumers are creating new online buying habits. Many consumers are turning to online sites for essentials like groceries, clothes, and entertainment. Movie and TV streaming sites are popping up regularly. Since we are forced to stay home we now turn to online for most of our entertainment. ISP’s are strained to keep up with demand. School Children are doing online courses. Dads and moms searching for employment.
When things start turning for the better we will still be reluctant to frequent malls and stores for fear of getting sick. We will be afraid of crowds and large gatherings.
Millions of customers are now turning to online sites for all their shopping needs. This is putting an extreme burden on eCommerce sites. Extra bandwidth and stock replenishing has created shortages and extra costs to these sites. Some of the smaller sites were not geared up for the onslaught and crashed. The larger sites were affected as well.
More and more sites are responding by beefing up security and better their customer experience. It is paramount we shop securely as possible. We also expect to easily navigate a site to find what we want and need without too many clicks. Shops around the country are trying to re-stock and add new products as fast as they can. However most online stores are drop shippers and are at the mercy of their vendors. We are all hard working to make sure we have what you need when you need it.
When we weather this storm and are back to some sort of semblance we may try to hit a mall or two but that could be a while longer. We just don’t know and that’s what bothers a lot of us. Hopefully soon
